If you've been putting off calling an allergist, whether for yourself or your child, you're not alone. A lot of patients tell me the same thing: they weren't sure what to expect, so they just kept waiting. This post is here to change that.
Whether you're dealing with seasonal sneezing, a suspected food allergy, chronic hives, or asthma that won't quit, your first appointment at Inspire Allergy and Asthma in Carmel, Indiana is designed to be informative, unhurried, and genuinely helpful, not overwhelming.
Here's exactly what you can expect from start to finish.
Before Your Appointment: What to Bring
A little preparation goes a long way. When you come in, it helps to have:
•A list of your current medications (including over-the-counter antihistamines, nasal sprays, and inhalers)
•Notes on your symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, and whether they're seasonal or year-round
•Any previous allergy testing results, if you've had them
•A list of foods, environments, or activities that seem to trigger reactions
•Your child's reaction history, if you're coming in for a pediatric concern, especially any ER visits or epinephrine use
One important note: if you've been told to stop antihistamines before your visit, please follow that guidance. Antihistamines like Zyrtec, Benadryl, or Claritin can blunt the results of skin testing. We'll give you specific instructions when you schedule.
Step 1: A Thorough Medical History
Your appointment starts with a conversation, not a clipboard of paperwork and a 10-minute rushed visit. As a direct care practice, Inspire Allergy and Asthma is built around unhurried time with your physician.
We'll talk through:
•Your symptoms in detail, what they look like, how often they happen, and how severe they get
•Your family history of allergies, asthma, or eczema
•Your home and work environment (pets, carpeting, mold exposure, outdoor activities)
•Any prior treatments you've tried and how they worked
This history is the foundation of everything that follows. Great allergy care isn't just about running tests , it's about understanding your whole picture.
Step 2: Allergy Testing (If Appropriate)
Allergy testing helps us identify your specific triggers so we can build a treatment plan that actually addresses the root cause, not just the symptoms.
The most common type of testing we do is skin prick testing. Here's what that looks like:
•A small amount of various allergen extracts is placed on your forearm or back using a tiny plastic toothpick , it's a light prick, not a needle injection
•You wait about 15–20 minutes
•We read the results: a small raised bump (called a wheal) at a test site indicates a likely allergy to that substance
Common allergens we test for include tree pollens, grasses, ragweed, mold, dust mites, pet dander, and, depending on your history, specific foods like peanut, tree nuts, egg, milk, wheat, fish, and shellfish.
Skin testing is generally well-tolerated by both adults and children. Some patients experience mild itching at the test sites, which resolves quickly. We're right there with you the whole time.
In some cases, we may recommend a blood test (specific IgE testing) instead of or in addition to skin testing, for example, if you're on a medication that can't be safely stopped, or if you've had a recent severe reaction.
Step 3: Results and Your Personalized Plan
Once we have your history and test results, we'll sit down together and go through everything. We won't just hand you a printout, we'll explain:
•What you're actually allergic to (and what came back negative)
•How your allergies relate to the symptoms you've been experiencing
•Your treatment options, and the pros and cons of each
Treatment options vary depending on what we find. They may include:
•Environmental control strategies to reduce your exposure at home
•Medication management, the right antihistamines, nasal sprays, or inhalers for your specific situation
• Allergy immunotherapy, either allergy drop (sublingual immunotherapy) or, for qualifying patients, oral immunotherapy (OIT) for food allergies
Oral immunotherapy is one of our specialties at Inspire Allergy and Asthma. For children and adults with food allergies to peanut, tree nuts, milk, egg, and other foods, OIT offers the possibility of meaningful desensitization over time , so that accidental exposures become far less dangerous. If OIT might be right for you or your child, we'll walk you through the process in detail.
What If My Child Is the Patient?
Pediatric allergy visits are a big part of what we do, and we understand that bringing a nervous child (or a nervous parent) in for allergy testing can feel daunting. A few things worth knowing:
•Skin testing is routinely done in children and is generally well-tolerated , we go at the child's pace
•We'll make sure your child understands what's happening before we do anything
•You'll be in the room the entire time
•We build our treatment plans with your family's real life in mind, school, sports, birthday parties, travel, not just the clinical ideal
Our goal is for every family to leave feeling informed and supported, not overwhelmed.
